Ladysmith

secondary School

Welcome Back 2025/2026

Uy’ skweyul Ladysmith Secondary Students and Families,

It was another great week at Ladysmith Secondary School! Staff and students are settling back into routine and learning is underway!

Lockers

All students should have now purchased their school lock from the office for $9 and be using their school issued locker. It is essential that students only use lockers that are assigned to them. If there are any concerns about locker assignment or location, concerned students will be called down to the office to meet with Ms. King next week.

Safety Drills

Today was our first of six fire drills this year. Staff and students did a great job of vacating the school in an orderly manner.
Today was also our first lockdown drill of the year. Many thanks to our staff and students for taking this drill seriously and to our local RCMP for attending and providing feedback.

We will continue to conduct fire, earthquake, and lockdown drills as we move throughout the school year. These opportunities serve as a valuable reminder to review safety procedures with your student for both school and home.

Grade Assemblies

This week we met with students in grade 9-12 for grade assemblies where personal digital devices and other aspects of the code of conduct were discussed. As a reminder, the student handbook was sent home last with important information about school operation.

AP Exam Registration Time

All grade 12 students wishing to get college credit or advanced placement in college courses are welcome to write AP exams in May of 2026. You will need to register with our International Education department by October 15th if you want to participate in this program.

AP exams, or Advanced Placement exams, are standardized tests offered by the College Board in Canada that allow high school students to demonstrate college-level knowledge in specific subjects. These exams cover a wide range of topics, from history and science to mathematics and languages. Scoring well on an AP exam can earn students college credit or advanced placement in college courses, potentially saving time and tuition costs. AP exams are taken in May and are designed to challenge students and prepare them for the rigors of college academics.

Domestic and international students can register to write. There is no prerequisite course to write an exam.

If your student is interested in taking one or more of our AP exams, please have them click the link below to register:

Picture Day

September 19th is picture day! Even if students do not wish to order pictures, we ask that they still have them taken as they are used for yearbooks and student cards.

Online Consent Forms

Online consent forms were sent home last week. Please check your email and complete these forms as students will lose access to their google accounts and walking field trips if the forms are not complete by early October. Please contact our main office at info.ls@sd68.bc.ca or 250-245-3043 with any questions.

Terry Fox Run

This year marks the 45th Anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. Terry’s incredible journey is an important part of Canadian history and a story that continues to inspire us all. Each year, schools across the country join together in the Terry Fox National School Run Day. This year, Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public Schools will celebrate with a special three-day event that will connect all of our school communities in honour of Terry’s memory and legacy. Each school will form a relay team of 5–8 runners who will carry the Terry Fox flag from their school to a neighbouring school. Students and staff will gather to cheer on the arriving runners, and then send off their own team as the flag continues its journey. This meaningful “flag hand-off” will lead into each school’s own Terry Fox Run.

The event will take place from Tuesday, September 23 to Thursday, September 25. Our school’s participation is scheduled for Tuesday, September 23rd, with details about our timing and route to follow soon. We will also be fundraising for the Terry Fox Foundation, and more information will be shared closer to the event.

PAC Corner.. Your voices matter!

Are you interested in being more involved with the school community? Consider joining the Parents Auxiliary Committee (PAC)!

The School Act gives parents the right, through PACs, to assume an advisory role in every school. PAC is the officially recognized collective voice of parents of their school. It is a forum to discuss matters related to the education of your children. In addition, a PAC, works with the school administration to allocate gaming funds received by the province of British Columbia. Unlike elementary school PAC’s, there is no fundraising involved and meetings typically last no longer than an hour.

The PAC meets on the third Wednesday of most months at 6:00pm in the library. Our first meeting is Wednesday September 17.

All parents are PAC members and are welcome to attend!
